Hey everyone, I'm planning to build a deck next weekend. I need to cut some trim pieces and maybe a few notches in the joists. I'm thinking about getting a rotary tool for the fine cuts. Any recommendations? I don't want to spend a fortune, but I want something reliable.

Before you start cutting, make sure you've got proper PPE. Dust mask and safety glasses are a must with those little grinders. For a deck, a rotary tool is good for detail work, but for cutting joists you might want a circular saw. What kind of attachments are you planning to use?

I'd look at the Dremel 4300. It's got variable speed and works great for precision cuts. I used mine to cut some decorative patterns on a deck railing last summer. Just go slow with the right cutting bit.

If you're on a budget, the Wen 2305 is decent. Not as powerful as a Dremel, but gets the job done. For notches in joists, I'd recommend a spiral cutting bit. But honestly, for a deck, you might be better off with a jigsaw or a circular saw for most cuts. The rotary tool is more for finishing touches.

Thanks for the tips! I think I'll go with the Dremel 4300 and a cutting kit. I'll use my circular saw for the big cuts and the rotary for the fine details. And yeah, I'll grab some safety glasses too. Appreciate the help!
