Hey everyone,

I'm in the market for a new rotary tool and I've narrowed it down to DeWalt or Makita. I've been using a cheap no-name one for years and it finally died. I mostly do DIY stuff around the house – cutting screws, sanding small areas, polishing, that kind of thing. Sometimes I help my buddy with his car projects.

I've read good things about both brands, but I can't decide. The DeWalt seems to have more accessories included, but the Makita feels more comfortable in my hand. Price is pretty similar.

Anyone have experience with either? Which one would you recommend for a weekend warrior like me? Thanks!

I've used both in my shop. For woodworking, the Makita has a slight edge in terms of precision and lower vibration. The DeWalt is a beast though – it can handle heavier cuts without bogging down. If you're doing a lot of metal cutting, go DeWalt. For fine detail work, Makita. But honestly, either will serve you well. Just make sure you get one with a variable speed dial – that's a game changer.

Before you buy, think about safety! Rotary tools can be dangerous if you don't respect them. Whichever brand you choose, make sure it has a good guard and that you always wear eye protection. I've seen too many guys skip the safety glasses and end up in the ER. Also, check the RPM range – higher RPM doesn't always mean better; you need control. Makita tends to have smoother start-up, which is safer for beginners. DeWalt's power is great but can kick back if you're not careful. Just my two cents.

Precision is key for me. I've had the Makita for about 3 years now and the runout is minimal – that means less wobble and cleaner cuts. The collet system on the Makita is also more precise. If you're doing any inlay work or fine sanding, you'll appreciate that. The DeWalt I tried had a bit more play in the shaft. But if you're just doing rough work, it won't matter. Also, consider the warranty – Makita's is usually 3 years, DeWalt's is 3 years too but sometimes they have promotions. Either way, buy from a reputable dealer so you can get service if needed.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! I think I'm leaning toward the Makita based on the precision and safety comments. I do want to get into some finer woodworking projects eventually, so that makes sense. I'll check out the variable speed models. Appreciate the help!
