Hey folks, looking to upgrade my rotary tool setup. Currently using an older DeWalt but considering switching to Makita for their brushless options. Need something that can handle daily use on job sites - cutting metal, grinding, polishing. Anyone have experience with both brands for rotary tools? Specifically looking at DeWalt's DWE4887 vs Makita's GD0801C. Budget isn't a huge concern, but reliability is key.

Dan, I've run both on commercial sites for years. DeWalt's got that classic power and durability - their collet system is bulletproof. But Makita's brushless motors run cooler and last longer between charges if you're using cordless. For heavy metal work, I'd lean DeWalt for the raw torque, but Makita wins if you need precision on delicate materials. Have you checked the accessory compatibility? Makita's tend to have more third-party support.

As a DIYer who does weekend projects, I love my Makita! So much smoother than my buddy's DeWalt when doing detail work on wood carvings. But for what you're describing Dan, maybe DeWalt is better? The Makita feels lighter though - my wrists thank me after hours of use. Have you considered vibration levels? Makita's anti-vibe tech is no joke.

Thanks both. Pete - good point about accessory compatibility. I'm mostly using name-brand bits anyway. Steve - vibration is actually a big factor since I'm using this 4-5 hours daily. Makita's rep for smoother operation is tempting. Anyone have long-term reliability data? My current DeWalt is 8 years old and still kicking, just getting heavy for overhead work.

Our shop has Makitas that are 5+ years old with zero brush replacements. DeWalt's last about the same but need more maintenance. If vibration's a concern, test them both - Makita's ergonomics are better for extended use. But DeWalt's service network is wider if something breaks. Honestly can't go wrong with either, but for your use case? I'd say Makita for the brushless efficiency and comfort.
