Hey folks, I'm in the market for a new rotary tool and can't decide between DeWalt and Makita. I do a lot of detailed woodworking and need something that can handle fine engraving and intricate cuts without wobble. Anyone have experience with both brands for precision tasks? I've heard DeWalt has better speed control, but Makita might have smoother operation. Help me out!

Bob, I've used both on job sites for years. DeWalt's DWE4887 is a beast - variable speed up to 35k RPM, solid chuck system, and it takes a beating. Makita's GD0801C is smoother and quieter, but I've had issues with the collet loosening over time. For precision, go with DeWalt if you need durability, Makita if vibration is your main concern. Both will get the job done professionally.

MAKITA ALL THE WAY! I've been using their tools for 15 years and never had a single rotary tool fail. The balance is perfect for detailed work, and their customer service is top-notch when you need parts. DeWalt might be flashy, but Makita's engineering is superior for fine control. Trust me, once you go Makita, you never go back!

Thanks for the input! Carl, that's helpful about the collet issue - I hate tools that can't maintain alignment. Rick, I appreciate the brand loyalty, but have you actually compared them side-by-side for engraving? I'm leaning toward DeWalt after Carl's comment about durability, but still torn. Anyone tried the accessory compatibility between brands?

Accessories are mostly interchangeable with proper collets, Bob. DeWalt uses a standard 1/8" collet system that works with most bits. Makita's proprietary quick-change is nice but limits options. For your woodworking, consider the DeWalt with their engraving kit - it's what my detail guys use for custom trim work. Just my two cents.
