Hey everyone, I'm looking to upgrade my old rotary tool and can't decide between DeWalt and Makita. I mostly do home projects - cutting tiles, sanding small areas, polishing metal, that kind of stuff. I want something that'll last but don't need pro-level gear. Anyone have experience with both brands? Budget is around $150-200.

DEWALT ALL THE WAY. I've been using their 20V Max cordless rotary tool for 2 years now and it's a beast. The battery life is insane - I can work all weekend on one charge. Plus it's built like a tank. Dropped mine off a ladder last month and it still works perfect. Makita is overpriced for what you get, trust me.

Steve, you're missing the point. For precision work, Makita's variable speed control is far superior. The DeWalt jumps between speeds too aggressively. I use my Makita for detailed engraving and jewelry making - the 0-35,000 RPM range with smooth transitions is crucial. What specific attachments do you need, Pete? That might determine which system works better.

Sarah you're talking about crafts, Pete said DIY. DeWalt has plenty of attachments and they're cheaper too. Their quick-change collet system is way faster when you're switching between cutting and sanding. Makita's tiny buttons are hard to use with gloves on. DeWalt = power, Makita = fussy.

Thanks both! Good points. I do need good speed control for detail work sometimes, but durability matters too. Maybe I'll check out the DeWalt corded version - seems like a good middle ground? Anyone tried that one?
