Hey guys, I'm looking at getting a rotary tool for some light carving and grinding. Can't decide between the DeWalt DW660 and the Makita RT0701C. I've heard good things about both. Anyone have experience with either? I'm leaning towards Makita because of the variable speed, but DeWalt seems tougher.

I've got the DeWalt DW660 and it's been a workhorse for me. Used it for cutting tile and grinding rust off old tools. It's a little noisy but never had an issue. The Makita is also solid but I heard the collet can be finicky. If you want variable speed, go Makita though.

For carving and restoration work, I'd go with the Makita. The variable speed is a game-changer for detail work. I've had mine for years and it's still going strong. Just be careful with the collet - make sure to tighten it properly. DeWalt is more for heavy-duty grinding IMO.

Thanks guys! I think I'll go with the Makita then. Larry, any tips on the collet? I don't want to mess it up.

Sure! Just make sure you use the included wrench to tighten it firmly. Don't overtighten though. And when changing bits, clean the collet with a brush sometimes to avoid grit buildup. Enjoy the tool, it's a beast for the price!
