Hey folks, I'm looking at getting a new rotary tool for some upcoming projects around the house - mostly cutting tile, sanding down old woodwork, and maybe some light engraving. I've narrowed it down to DeWalt and Makita, both have cordless models that look solid. DeWalt's got that 20V MAX line, Makita has their 18V LXT. Anyone have hands-on experience with both? I'm leaning Makita because I've had their drills forever, but DeWalt's warranty is tempting. Thoughts?

Tim, I've used both extensively on job sites. For rotary tools, I'd go Makita all day. Their LXT brushless model runs smoother under load, especially when you're grinding or cutting harder materials. DeWalt's not bad, but I've had two of their rotary tools overheat during prolonged use on tile work. Makita's ergonomics are better too - less vibration fatigue. That said, if you're already in one battery ecosystem, stick with it for convenience!

Important safety note both of you are missing: Check the RPM ranges and included guards. Makita's XGT series has a better integrated debris shield for the accessory changes. DeWalt's quick-change collet is faster but exposes more moving parts. For home use, either is fine IF you wear proper PPE - I've seen too many ER visits from rotary tool mishaps. Also, Makita tends to have clearer safety manuals, but DeWalt's online resources are more extensive.

Weekend warrior here - I've got the DeWalt 20V and my brother has the Makita. Honestly for home stuff you can't go wrong with either! The DeWalt feels a bit more powerful to me when I'm cutting through old door hinges, but the Makita is quieter. Battery life is about the same. Pro tip: whichever you get, buy the accessory kit with all the bits - saves money later. I'm team yellow but only cause it matches my other tools lol
