Hey guys, I've been using my rotary tool to cut some metal brackets and it's throwing sparks everywhere. I'm wearing safety glasses but I can smell something burning. Should I be wearing a respirator? Which one do you recommend for metal dust and fumes?

Definitely get a respirator! I use a half-face respirator with P100 filters when grinding or cutting metal. The sparks aren't just a fire hazard, that fine metal dust will mess up your lungs. Also, make sure you're not wearing synthetic clothing – that stuff melts onto your skin if a spark catches it. Ask me how I know...

Stick with Dremel brand accessories, they throw less sparks than the cheapos. For PPE, I just use a simple N95 mask and safety glasses. Never had an issue. But if you're really worried, get the full face shield, especially if you're cutting grinder wheels – those can explode.

Sparks mean you're generating heat and possibly small particles. A N95 is not enough for metal fumes. Get a respirator with organic vapor cartridges if you're soldering or welding too. Also, check your disc – if it's worn out it'll throw more sparks and could shatter. Safety first guys.
