So I was using my Dremel yesterday to cut some metal, and I thought I'd just do a quick cut without goggles. Big mistake! A tiny shard flew off and hit me right in the eye. Luckily I blinked and it just grazed my eyelid, but it scared the crap out of me. I'm a weekend warrior and I know better. Please, always wear eye protection with these things. They spin so fast and send debris everywhere. Anyone else have a close call?

Yikes, glad you're ok! I'm with you on that. I always wear a full face shield when using my rotary tool, even for small jobs. I learned my lesson when a cutoff wheel shattered and a piece hit my cheek. It left a small scar. No joke, these things are like mini angle grinders. Also, don't forget a dust mask if you're grinding or sanding, that fine dust is nasty.

As the local safety guy, I approve this message. Eye protection is non-negotiable. I'd also recommend using a bit with a guard if possible, and make sure your work is clamped securely. Losing grip at 30k rpm is a recipe for disaster. I've seen too many accidents from people freehanding it. And Sarah, good on you for sharing. We all get complacent sometimes.

Man, I've had a few close calls too. Last month I was engraving a knife blade and a bit grabbed and snapped. The tip flew off and hit my safety glasses. Cracked the lens. If I hadn't had them on, I'd be blind in one eye. I've since upgraded to some good ones with anti-fog. Also, don't use bits that are undersized or worn, they're more prone to breaking.
