Hey all, I'm about to start building a 12x16 shed in my backyard. I need a rotary tool for cutting some metal siding, sanding down rough edges, and maybe some engraving on the door. I've seen the Dremel 4300 and the Milwaukee M12 rotary tool. Which one would you guys recommend for this kind of work? I'm not a pro, just a weekend warrior.

I've got a soft spot for the Dremel 4300 just because of the sheer amount of accessories available. But for your shed, I'd lean towards the Milwaukee M12 if you're already in the M12 system. It's got more torque and the battery life is decent for short bursts. Plus, if you're going to be up on a ladder or something, cordless is handy. Just make sure you get the variable speed model so you can dial it in for cutting metal.

Gary, I've used both. Dremel's like a scalpel, Milwaukee's like a mini grinder. For cutting siding, you might want something with a bit more oomph. I actually used my Dremel 4300 with a reinforced cut-off wheel for some aluminum trim, and it worked fine but took a while. If you're doing a lot of cuts, the Milwaukee will save you time. But if you're patient, Dremel is fine. Also, don't forget to wear eye protection - those little wheels shatter like crazy.

I'm with Pete on the M12. I've got the M12 rotary and it's a beast for the size. But one thing - if you're planning on doing any detail sanding in tight corners, the Dremel's flexible shaft attachment is a godsend. I've got a Dremel with a flex shaft that I use for cleaning up pipes and stuff. Maybe consider what you'll use it for after the shed. If it's just this project, go with the cheaper one. If you'll use it for years, invest.

Thanks guys, that's helpful. I'm leaning towards the Dremel 4300 now because of the flex shaft option for sanding. I think I'll be using it more for detail work after the shed. But I'll pick up a couple extra cut-off wheels and some safety glasses. Appreciate the advice!
