So I was at HF today picking up some zip ties and saw this rotary tool kit on clearance for $19.99. It's their Chicago Electric brand, 80-piece accessory kit, variable speed 8k-35k RPM. I've been wanting a Dremel for a while but can't justify $100+ right now. Anyone have experience with these cheapo rotary tools? Is it gonna burn out in a week or is it actually decent for light DIY stuff? Mostly gonna use it for cutting screws, sanding small spots, maybe polishing some aluminum parts on my motorcycle.

Hank, first thing – SAFETY GLASSES. Rotary tools throw tiny shrapnel like nobody's business. I've seen more eye injuries from these than any other power tool. That said, for $20 it's a decent starter. The HF one is a clone of the old Dremel. Bearings might be a little sloppy, and the collet might not grip as tight, but for light duty it'll do. Just don't push it hard – let the tool do the work. Also, make sure you unplug it before changing bits. I've seen too many guys get their fingers chewed up because they left it plugged in and bumped the switch.

I bought one of those like 3 years ago. Still works! Used it to cut some rusty bolts on my trailer, sanded a bunch of small stuff, even carved a pumpkin with it one Halloween (don't ask). The accessories are garbage though – the cut-off wheels shatter if you look at them wrong. I'd recommend buying a pack of reinforced Dremel cut-off wheels when you can. Also, the wrench they give you is tiny and easy to lose, so keep it in the case. For 20 bucks, you can't go wrong. If it dies, you're out a sawbuck and a half. Way better than renting a tool.

Honestly, you get what you pay for. I'm a Dremel guy through and through. My 4000 has been going strong for 8 years and the accessories are top notch. The HF one might work for a while, but the motor will probably get hot and the speed dial will get wonky. If you're just doing occasional stuff, fine. But if you plan to use it a lot, save up for a Dremel. Also, Dremel has a 2-year warranty. HF has like 90 days. Just my 2 cents. But hey, for $20, it's a cheap way to see if you even like rotary tools. If you do, upgrade later.

Thanks guys! Yeah Rick, I already got safety glasses and a face shield from when I use my angle grinder. I'll definitely be careful. Larry, good tip on the reinforced wheels. I'll order some. Gary, I hear ya on the Dremel quality, but right now I just need something to get me through a few projects. If it dies, I'll spring for the real deal. Pulled the trigger – $21.59 after tax. Worst case, I return it if it's DOA. I'll report back after I try it out this weekend. Wish me luck!
