Hey everyone, I’m refinishing my 20x20 deck this summer. It’s got old paint and some rough spots. I’ve borrowed a random orbital sander before but it took forever. Should I buy a belt sander for speed? Or stick with orbital? Budget around $150. Thanks!

For a deck, I’d go with a belt sander. I have a Makita 9903 and it chews through material. But careful – it can dig in if you’re not steady. Use 80 grit then 120. Orbital is safer for furniture but for a deck? Belt all the way. Also, get a dust bag or you’ll be eating sawdust.

I second the belt sander. But if you’re not experienced, consider a random orbital with a heavy grit (like 40) to start. The belt can leave swirls. I’d also look at the Bosch 1250DEVS – it’s a beast. Or, if you have the budget, a Festool Rotex is amazing but $$.

Professional opinion: For a deck, rent a drum sander from Home Depot. It’ll save you time and your back. A belt sander is okay for small areas but a drum sander will flatten the whole thing in 1/3 the time. Use 36 grit then 60. Finish with a random orbital for the edges. And wear a respirator – that old paint could have lead.

Thanks guys! I think I’ll try the belt sander route. Carl, renting a drum sander sounds great but I’ve got some tight corners and steps – might be tricky. I’ll look into the Makita or Bosch. Appreciate the help!
