Hey all, I'm about to refinish my 500 sq ft deck. I've got a orbital sander at home but it's going to take forever. Should I rent a belt sander or a drum sander? My deck is in rough shape with old paint and some splinters. I've heard drum sanders can gouge if you're not careful. Any advice?

Hey Dan! If it's really bad, a drum sander will save you hours, but they can be aggressive. For a deck, I'd actually recommend a belt sander with a dust bag, you have more control. I did a deck with a rented belt sander and it was fine. Just practice on a scrap piece first. Also, make sure to use the right grit: start with 36 or 40 grit to strip the old paint, then 60, and finish with 80 or 100. Don't forget ear protection and a mask!

I'm a pro, and I would say skip the drum sander for decks - they're meant for floors. Rent a floor sander? No way, too overkill. Belt sander is good, but even better: consider a power planer for the worst spots if you have high ridges. Another option is a random orbital sander with 36 grit if the paint is not too thick. But honestly, for 500 sq ft, a rent a large random orbital like the Festool Rotex or the Mirka, those things are beasts. Cost more but they're dustless and much safer. Trust me, I've seen many a deck ruined by an overzealous belt sander.

I second Felix on the random orbital - they're easier to handle. But if you're on a budget, a belt sander will do. Just make sure you keep it moving - never stay in one spot too long. And for the love of god, use a dust extractor or you'll be breathing that fine sawdust. I made that mistake once and my sinuses hated me for a week. Also, check the rental shop for a dust shroud for the belt sander - some come with them.

Thanks guys! I appreciate the tips. I think I'll go with the belt sander, but I'll be careful with the 36 grit and keep it moving. I'll also check if I can get a dust shroud. I'll post an after pic when it's done!
