Alright folks, I'm in the market for a new orbital sander. I've been using a cheap one from Harbor Freight and it's finally giving up the ghost. I've narrowed it down to the DeWalt DWE6421 and the Makita BO5041K. Both have good reviews, but I can't decide. For those of you who've used either, which one would you go with for weekend projects and some light furniture work? Any input is appreciated!

I've got the Makita BO5041K and it's been a champ for me. The variable speed is nice, and it's pretty quiet compared to some others I've used. The dust collection is decent too, but you'll want a good shop vac hooked up. I've sanded a ton of stuff with it and it's held up fine. Haven't tried the DeWalt, but Makita's build quality is solid.

I'm a DeWalt guy through and through, but I'll be honest: the DWE6421 is a solid sander. It's got a nice grip, low vibration, and the dust bag actually works okay for small jobs. However, if you're doing a lot of work, you'll want to hook up a vac. I've also heard Makita's dust collection is better, but I can't confirm. I'd say go with the one that feels better in your hands. Both are good, you can't go wrong.

That's a good point, Bob. Ergonomics matter a lot when you're sanding for hours. I've got bigger hands, and the Makita fits me well. Also, don't forget to check the hook-and-loop pad. Makita's pad seems to hold paper better, but I think both have decent systems. Chris, if you can, try to get to a store and feel them both out.

Thanks for the input guys. I might just have to do that. I'm leaning a bit towards the Makita now, but I'll see if I can find a store that has both. Appreciate the help!
