Alright guys, I'm in the market for a new random orbital sander. My old Porter Cable finally gave up the ghost. I'm torn between the DeWalt DWE6421 and the Makita BO5041. I do mostly trim work and cabinetry, need something that can handle fine sanding but also can strip paint when needed. Any of you have experience with either? I'm leaning DeWalt 'cause I'm already all in on their battery system, but I've heard Makita's dust collection is top notch.

I've had the Makita BO5041 for about 2 years now. It's a beast when it comes to finishing. The variable speed is actually useful, I'll drop it to 3 for final pass on hardwood. Dust collection is legit with a vac attached, but with the bag it's just ok. It's a bit heavy for overhead work if you're doing that. But it's smooth as butter, no vibration. Never used the DeWalt, but I've seen it on site, looks solid too.

I got the DeWalt DWE6421 cause I needed to match my drill/driver. Honestly, it's a nice piece. The hook and loop pad holds paper well, and the dust box actually works decently if you empty it often. The on-board vacuum adapter is a plus if you have a shop vac. But watch out, the switch can be a bit finicky if you get sawdust in it. Also, it's not variable speed, just a fixed 12K OPM, but for most stuff that's fine.

I've used both on actual jobs. For finish work, Makita wins hands down. The BO5041 has a finer orbit and the counterweight system makes it feel like a precision tool. For aggressive stripping, the DeWalt with 80 grit will eat through old varnish faster than the Makita. But the Makita's dust collection with a vac is noticably better - less cleanup in the end. My vote is Makita if you do more fine sanding, DeWalt if you're a bit of a roughneck like Steve here. ;) Just my two cents.
