OK so I'm in the market for a new random orbital sander. Been using a borrowed DeWalt for a while and love it, but I see a lot of guys swearing by Makita. This will be for general DIY, maybe some furniture refinishing. What do you all think? DeWalt all the way? Or is Makita worth the switch? Let's hear it.

Honestly, it depends on what you value more: raw power or finesse. I've used both and the Makita has a smoother operation and better dust collection, IMO. The DeWalt is a beast but can be a bit aggressive for fine work. If you're doing furniture, I'd lean Makita. But hey, if you're already invested in DeWalt batteries, stick with what you got.

I've got the Makita BO5041 and it's a dream. The variable speed dial is super precise, and the ergonomics are top-notch. I've used DeWalt sanders before and they're solid, but Makita just feels more refined. Plus, the vibration is way less, which matters if you're sanding for hours. Go Makita, you won't regret it.

Thanks for the input, guys. I do have a bunch of DeWalt 20V batteries, so that's a factor. But I'm not against buying into another system if it's worth it. HammerHank, you said the DeWalt can be aggressive – is that a dealbreaker for finish sanding? I'm not a pro, just a hobbyist.

Not a dealbreaker, but you'll want to be careful. The DeWalt has a faster removal rate, so for finish work you gotta keep it moving and use finer grits. Makita is more forgiving. If you're mostly doing paint prep and rough stuff, DeWalt is great. For furniture, Makita's control wins. Just my 2 cents.
