Hey guys, I've been doing some sanding with my new orbital sander and noticed a fine dust in the air. I picked up a cheap dust mask from the hardware store, but I'm wondering if that's enough? I've heard some folks say you need a proper respirator. What do you all use?

Good question, Dave. Honestly, those paper masks are pretty useless for fine dust. I made that mistake when I started out. After a day of sanding, my nose was full of sawdust. Now I use a half-face respirator with P100 filters. It's a bit bulky but worth it. Your lungs will thank you later.

What Larry said. I'm in a dusty environment every day, and I never cheap out on PPE. A proper respirator is a must, especially if you're sanding anything with finish or MDF. Also, make sure it fits well – do a seal check. And if you're on a budget, you can get a decent one for like 30 bucks. Worth every penny.

Thanks guys, I'll look into a respirator. One more thing – is it okay to use a shop vac with a filter to catch the dust at the source? Or is that overkill?

Nah, that's actually a great idea. I hook my sander up to a vac with a HEPA filter. It cuts down on airborne dust a lot. Just make sure the vac is rated for fine dust. And wear that respirator anyway – no sense in risking it.
