Found a deal on a random orbital sander, worth it?

So I was at the local hardware store and saw a Porter Cable 5" random orbital sander on clearance for $35. It's normally around $70. I've been using a cheap palm sander for ages, so this seems like a no-brainer, but I wanted to get some opinions before I pull the trigger. Is it any good? I do mostly small projects, shelves, and stuff like that.

That's a steal, but before you buy, check the dust collection. The problem with some cheaper random orbitals is they fling dust everywhere, and that's not just messy, it's a health hazard. Look for one that has a good hook-and-loop pad and can connect to a vac. Also, make sure it has variable speed. You don't want to burn through your wood. Safety first!

I've had a Porter Cable for over a decade, still runs like a champ. At $35, it's a bargain. Even if you upgrade later, you'll get your money's worth. Just pop in a good 120 grit and you'll see the difference. Also, if you're gonna be doing a lot of sanding, invest in a dust extractor. Your lungs will thank you. I learned that the hard way.

Good tip about the dust. I'll check the port, but I think it comes with a bag too. My budget is tight, but I could get a small shop vac later. I think I'll grab it tomorrow. Thanks for the push!

No problem! Just remember to wear a mask even with dust collection. And if you're doing a lot of sanding, take breaks to let the sander cool down. Those cheap ones can overheat and melt the pad if you push too hard. Let it do the work.
