Is a respirator overkill for sanding MDF?

Hey everyone, just a heads up - wear a respirator when sanding MDF, even if you're just doing a small job. I used to think a dust mask was enough but learned the hard way. Now I use a half-face respirator with P100 filters. Don't be like me and hack up dust for days!

Totally agree, Rick. MDF dust is nasty stuff - fine particles and formaldehyde. I use a powered respirator with a hood when I'm doing a lot of sanding. Overkill? Maybe, but my lungs are worth it.

I get the safety thing but a good respirator costs like $40. I just use a N95 mask I had left over from painting. Seems fine? Or am I missing something?

Sam265, N95 is better than nothing, but for MDF you really want a half-face or full-face with organic vapor cartridges because of the formaldehyde. Cheap insurance in the long run. I splurged on a 3M one and it's lasted years.

Also make sure it seals properly. Beard? You might not get a good seal. I shave before heavy sanding or use a positive pressure hood. Stay safe, folks!
