I know this is a power tool forum, but I figure a lot of us are small business owners or DIYers in Cali. What do you guys think? Will this affect tool prices or availability? I'm worried it might drive companies like DeWalt or Milwaukee out of state, and then we'll pay more. Or am I overthinking it?

Gary, I run a renovation biz in Sacramento. Honestly, I'm more worried about gas prices and lumber costs than this tax. But if businesses flee, it could mean fewer jobs, which means fewer customers for me. As for tools, most of the big brands manufacture overseas anyway, so I doubt they'll move because of a state tax. They might raise prices to cover costs, though. But that's just my 2 cents. BTW, have you tried the new DeWalt 20V sander? It's a beast!

I'm just an apprentice, but I overheard my boss talking about this. He said if taxes go up, he might have to cut back on new equipment. That would suck because I was hoping to get a new sander soon. But I don't know much about politics. Is this tax actually gonna happen? I thought it was just a proposal.

Thanks Dan. I guess you're right about manufacturing being overseas. Tim, from what I read, it's still just a proposal, but polls show people are nervous. I just hope it doesn't trickle down to us hobbyists. Anyway, back to sanders - I'm thinking of getting a random orbital sander. Any recommendations?

For random orbital, I swear by my DeWalt DWE6423. It's variable speed and does a great job on cabinets. But if you're on a budget, the Bosch ROS20VSC is also solid. Just stay away from the cheap no-name ones - they don't last. As for the tax thing, let's keep politics in the off-topic section, lol. But yeah, I wouldn't panic just yet.
