Sanding a new cedar deck - random orbital or belt sander?

Hey guys, just built a 12x16 cedar deck. It's got some rough spots and I want to smooth it out before sealing. I've got a cheap palm sander but it's taking forever. Should I get a random orbital sander or a belt sander for this? Don't want to mess it up.

I'd go with a random orbital sander for a deck. Belt sanders are aggressive and can leave deep scratches if you're not careful, especially on soft cedar. Get a 5-inch or 6-inch random orbital with variable speed. Use 80-grit to start, then 120. MUCH safer for a first-timer. I swear by my Makita BO5041.

Don't forget the PPE! Cedar dust is nasty - wear a proper respirator, not just a dust mask. Also, eye protection. And check for any nails or screws that might be proud - they'll ruin your sandpaper in seconds. Use a countersink bit if needed.

Belt sander with 60-grit would melt through that deck LOL. But yeah, RO is the way to go for finish work. One tip: hook up a vacuum to the sander to keep dust down. Also, if you've got a lot of square footage, consider a floor sander rental. Might save your back.

Thanks guys! I'll go with a random orbital and definitely grab a respirator. I saw a DeWalt kit on sale - any good? I don't want to break the bank but dont want junk either.
