Hey guys, quick question - I've been using my new orbital sander on some old paint, and I keep forgetting to wear a mask. Is it really that bad if I just hold my breath? Or do I need to go get a respirator? I don't want to look dumb on the job.

Dude, don't mess around with that. Old paint could have lead, and even new stuff has chems you don't want in your lungs. Get at least a N95 mask, better yet a half-face respirator with P100 filters. I learned the hard way - now I got a cough that won't quit. Not worth it.

Listen to Paul. I've been sanding for 20 years and I never skip the mask. Also, get a shop vac with a HEPA filter connected to your sander. Cuts down the dust big time. Your future self will thank you.

I use a 3M respirator with the pink pancake filters. It's a bit hot but works great. Also, wear safety glasses - I had a splinter fly into my eye last week. Not fun.

Thanks everyone! I'm heading to the hardware store after work. Gonna grab a respirator and some glasses. Better safe than sorry!
