Hey everyone, I'm planning on building a 12x16 deck this summer. I've got some experience with basic tools but never tackled something this big. What saw(s) do you recommend? I'm on a budget but want something decent. Thanks!

For a deck, you're gonna want a circular saw for the long cuts. I'd recommend a 7-1/4" with a good blade. Don't bother with a miter saw unless you're doing a lot of angle cuts, but a decent circular saw and a speed square will get you there. Check out the Makita 5007MG or even a cordless if you don't want to mess with cords.

I second the circular saw for decking. But if you have the budget, a compound miter saw is a game-changer for cutting joists and railings to length. Even a cheap 10" slider can save you tons of time. I got mine for under $200 and it's held up for years. Just make sure to get a good carbide blade for pressure-treated lumber.

Listen to SparkySam. Don't overthink it. A circ saw and a straight edge will do 90% of the work. I've built dozens of decks with just that. For the miters, you can use a handsaw or a cheap miter box if you're on a tight buget. But if you're doing this often, invest in a sliding miter saw. Also, don't forget a jigsaw for the notches around posts.

Thanks guys! I think I'll go with a circular saw for now and maybe pick up a miter saw later. Any recommendations on brands for a circular saw? I've seen a lot of Ryobi and DeWalt options at the local hardware store.
