Building a deck - circular saw or miter saw?

Hey everyone! I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck in my backyard. I need to cut a bunch of 2x4s and 2x6s, plus some 4x4 posts. I have a basic circular saw but it's old and not very accurate. Should I invest in a miter saw or a better circular saw? Any advice?

If you're just cutting framing lumber, a good circular saw with a straight edge guide can handle it. But for repeat cuts at angles, a miter saw is a game changer. I'd say go for a compound miter saw, 10 or 12 inch. You'll use it for trim and other projects later. Just remember to use a sharp blade and measure twice, cut once. Safety first!

I agree with Pete. A miter saw is great for exact cuts, especially for the railing and fascia. But don't forget about the posts - you might need a sawzall for cutting them to height if they're already set in concrete. Or a handsaw for precision. Also, if you get a miter saw, get one with a laser guide, it helps with accuracy.

If you're on a budget, you could get a decent circular saw and a speed square - that'll handle most cuts. But for a deck, you'll be making a lot of cuts, and a miter saw will save you time and frustration. Just be careful with the kickback, and always use proper PPE. Also, make sure to support long boards properly when cutting.

Thanks everyone! I think I'll go with a compound miter saw. Any specific brands you'd recommend? I've seen DeWalt and Milwaukee in the stores. Also, what about a table saw for ripping? I know I'll need to rip some 2x6s, but I could rent one or use a circular saw with a guide.
