Hey all, planning a 300 sq ft deck with composite decking over PT 2x12 joists. Need a circular saw that can rip 2x12s cleanly for notches and end cuts. Budget around $200. Corded preferred because battery life worries me. Any recommendations? Also, thoughts on a worm drive vs sidewinder?

Dan, for ripping 2x12s all day, get a worm drive. The torque is insane and they balance better for long cuts. Skilsaw mag 77 is the gold standard, around $150 used or $200 new. It'll outlast you. Pair it with a Diablo blade. If you're set on sidewinder, Makita 5007MG is solid but may struggle a bit on thick PT.

Dan, precision matters! If you're notching joists or doing miters, get the Skilsaw worm drive with a 24-tooth framing blade. But for ultimate accuracy on long rips, clamp a straightedge and use a track saw—even a cheap one like Wen or Kobalt. It'll save you from wavy cuts. Also, check the shoe on the saw for adjustment before buying.

Listen to Rick and Carl. Skilsaw worm drive, no question. I've built decks for 20 years with mine. One tip: when ripping PT, use a 32-tooth blade (not 24) for smoother cuts, and wear a respirator—PT dust is nasty. Also, if you can stretch budget a bit, get the Skilsaw SPT70 (lighter magnesium version). Total game changer.

Thanks guys! Skilsaw worm drive it is. I'll check Craigslist for a mag 77. Carl, maybe I'll rent a track saw for the long rips. Appreciate the tips about blades and dust protection. Will update with pics when I start!
