Deck build - mitre saw or circular saw for the framing?

Hey all, planning a 12x16 deck in the backyard. I've got a circular saw but wondering if a mitre saw would be worth the investment for the framing cuts. I'm on a budget but don't want to mess up the angles. What do you guys recommend?

I've restored a ton of old decks. For framing, a circular saw with a good guide is plenty. But if you're doing any railing or trim, a mitre saw speeds things up massively. Check pawn shops for a used 10" slider - you can snag one for under $100.

Agreed with Sarah. Circular saw for joists and beams. But if you're doing angled cuts for the rim joist or stairs, a mitre saw is nice. I'd say get a decent circular saw first and maybe rent a mitre saw for a day if needed.

Noob here - I built my deck with just a circular saw and a speed square. It worked fine, but the mitre cuts on the rails were ugly. If you want clean mitres, get a mitre saw. Also, don't forget a good blade makes all the difference.

As a specialist, I'd say a mitre saw is a game changer for decking. But for just the frame? Stick with the circ saw. Spend that money on a nice framing nailer instead - you'll thank me later. And Sarah's right about pawn shops, that's where I got my slider.
