Just scored a barely-used DeWalt miter saw for $150 - too good to be true?

Hey everyone, was browsing Craigslist and found a DeWalt DWS779 12-inch sliding compound miter saw for only $150! Seller says it's only been used a couple times for trim work and comes with the original blade and stand. Pics look clean, no rust. Should I jump on this or is there something fishy? I've been wanting to upgrade from my basic chop saw for crown molding projects.

OP, STOP! Before you hand over any cash, ask the seller to demonstrate it cutting a 2x4. Check the blade guard retraction - if it sticks or is damaged, that's a major red flag. Also inspect the power cord for fraying and make sure the safety trigger works smoothly. That model retails around $500 new, so at $150 either it's stolen, broken, or the seller doesn't know what they have. Safety first!

Whoa Hank, chill lol. $150 for a DWS779 is insane if it works! I got mine refurbished for $320 last year and thought THAT was a steal. Ask if they'll let you test it with your own wood. Check the sliding rails for smooth movement and listen for weird noises. Even if it needs a $50 blade replacement, you're still way ahead. Just meet in a public place - my buddy got scammed in a parking lot last month.

Nice find! The DWS779 is actually the predecessor to the DWS780 - main difference is the shadow cut line vs laser guide. I have both in my collection. At that price, I'd suspect either a divorce sale (happens often) or someone upgrading to cordless. Ask why they're selling. Check the miter and bevel detents - if they're sloppy, it might need adjustment. Bring a square to verify cuts are accurate. If it checks out, BUY IT IMMEDIATELY.

Update: Met the guy at a hardware store parking lot (thanks Felix!). He's a contractor switching to all cordless Makita gear. Saw cut perfectly through a 4x4 I brought. Rails were smooth, safety features worked. Even had the dust bag! Hank - no cord damage, guard was perfect. Mike - detents were crisp. Bought it for $140 cash! Already made my first crown cuts - dead accurate. Thanks team!
