Hey everyone, I'm planning to build a 12x16 foot deck in my backyard this spring. It's my first major DIY project besides some basic shelves. I've got the lumber list ready but I'm confused about what saws I actually need. I know I need to cut pressure-treated 2x6s and 4x4 posts, plus some composite decking boards. Should I get a circular saw, miter saw, or both? Any specific brands or models you'd recommend for a beginner? Budget is around $300-400 for saws. Thanks!

OP, you absolutely need DEWALT. Don't even look at other brands. For your deck, get the DWE575SB circular saw - it's lightweight, has great dust blower, and cuts through treated lumber like butter. Pair it with the DWS779 miter saw for those precise angled cuts on railings. Yes it'll push your budget but buy once cry once! I've built 3 decks with these tools and they're still running perfect after 5 years. Milwaukee and Makita fans will disagree but they're wrong ๐

Steve's not wrong about Dewalt quality, but hear me out - check Facebook Marketplace for old USA-made Porter Cable circular saws. I restored a 1978 model 314 for $40, put new brushes in it, and it'll outlast any new saw. For miter cuts, consider a good hand saw and miter box if you're trying to save $. Those composite boards cut easy with a fine-tooth blade. Also, don't forget a good jigsaw for notching around posts! My 2ยข

As a home inspector, I've seen too many DIY decks fail safety checks. Whatever saw you choose, make sure your cuts are SQUARE. Uneven joists = wobbly deck. A quality speed square is more important than an expensive saw. Also, that composite decking? Some brands dull blades fast - get extra blades. And PLEASE wear safety glasses, treated lumber splinters are nasty. For your budget, Ryobi's One+ system might work if you're only using occasionally.

Wow thanks everyone! Steve - I'll check out those Dewalts at Home Depot. Greg - love the restoration idea but I need this done in 2 weekends so maybe next time! Tom - good call on the speed square and safety gear, almost forgot that. Thinking I'll start with a circular saw and rent a miter saw for the weekend. Any blade recommendations for pressure treated wood? Should I get a special blade or will the stock one work?
