Just saw this article about 12 cool gadgets for handymen. Some of them look pretty neat, but I'm always skeptical about these 'must-have' lists. What do you all think? Any of these worth the money or just gimmicks? Check it out: [link]

I've been in the trade for 40 years, and I've seen my share of gadgets come and go. That article has a few decent picks, but a lot of them are overpriced solutions to problems you didn't even know you had. The magnetic wristband is handy, but I just use a magnetic screw holder. The laser level? I've got a good old bubble level that's never failed me. But each to their own, I suppose. Just make sure your basics are solid before you spend on fancy stuff.

As an apprentice, I'm always looking for tools that make my job easier. That article had a few things I'd love to try, like the auto-adjusting wire stripper and that electric screwdriver with the flexible shaft. But I gotta say, my old man (who's a carpenter) always says, 'If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.' So I'm a bit cautious. Does anyone have experience with the electric screwdriver? I'm thinking of getting one for assembly work.

Bob, I've used those flexible shaft screwdrivers. They're okay for tight spots, but they're not a replacement for a good ratcheting screwdriver. As for electric screwdrivers, they're great for speed, but you gotta have a delicate touch or you'll strip screws. I'd say get a decent one with torque control, and you'll be fine. Just don't expect it to do everything for you – you still gotta have the feel.

Thanks for the input, Tim. I agree that nothing beats good technique. I think the main takeaway from that article is that these gadgets can save time, but they're not magic. And safety-wise, make sure you're using the right tool for the job. A gadget that slips can be dangerous. Anyway, I'm thinking about that digital angle finder – has anyone used one? Seems like it could be handy for trim work.
