So I'm finally building that backyard deck I've been talking about for years. Got all the lumber and plans sorted, but now I'm realizing my screwdriver situation is a mess. I've got a bunch of mismatched ones from garage sales, and they're stripping screws left and right. I need a solid set that won't let me down. Any recommendations? I'm thinking maybe a ratcheting screwdriver for speed, but I also want precision for the finish work. What do you guys use?

Larry, for a deck, you're gonna want a good impact driver for the bulk of it, but for screwdrivers, I swear by my old-school set of cabinet-tip flatheads and Phillips. Been using the same set for 30 years. The key is to match the tip to the screw head exactly. If you're stripping screws, it's likely because you're using the wrong size or a worn tip. Get a set with hardened tips, like Grace or Wiha. They ain't cheap, but they last. Also, a bit of wax on the screw threads helps.

Felix is right about impact drivers for decks, but if you're set on screwdrivers, I've got a collection of over 200. For deck building, you'll want something with a comfortable grip and maybe a hex bolster for wrench-assist. I'd recommend the Klein Tools 11-in-1 or the Milwaukee 10-in-1. They're versatile and tough. But honestly, for a deck, you'll be miserable without a impact driver. Just my two cents.

Thanks guys. I do have an impact driver, but I was planning to use it for the framing and then switch to screwdrivers for the railing and trim to avoid over-driving. Maybe I'm overcomplicating? I'll look into those Klein and Wiha sets. Felix, what do you mean by 'cabinet-tip'? I've never heard that term.

Cabinet tip is just a flathead that's hollow-ground so it doesn't slip out of the screw slot. They're great for woodworking. But for deck railing, you might be fine with a good Phillips. Just make sure you pre-drill to avoid splitting. And yeah, impact driver for the framing, then switch to a screwdriver for the final tightening if you want. But don't baby it too much – decks are outdoor, they'll get beat up anyway. Good luck with the build!
