Hey all, I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck in my backyard. I've got basic tools but need a good drill/driver combo. Looking for something that can handle lag screws and decking without burning out. Budget around $200-300. Any recommendations?

Will, for deck work you want something with high torque and a hammer drill function for concrete anchors if needed. I've used DeWalt's 20V Max XR line for years. The DCD796 drill and DCF887 impact driver are beasts. They're around $250 for a set. Just make sure to get a good set of bits too.

I second the DeWalt suggestion. If you want a bit cheaper, the Milwaukee M18 Fuel set is also solid - I've seen it on sale for $279. For decks, get a side handle for the drill when driving long screws - saves your wrists. Also, consider an impact driver over a regular drill for the screws, it won't cam out.

I've been using Makita for 20 years. Their XDT16 impact driver has plenty of power for deck screws. But if you're set on DeWalt, can't go wrong. One tip: pre-drill for lag bolts into joists, especially if using hardwood. Your wrist will thank you.
