Building a deck - what screwdriver setup do I really need?

Hey folks, planning to build a 12x16 deck this spring. I've got my circular saw and drill sorted, but I'm wondering about screwdrivers. Do I need a dedicated impact driver or will my regular cordless drill handle deck screws okay? I've seen some guys using manual drivers for precision, but that seems slow. What's your experience?

Gary, first thing - make sure you're using corrosion-resistant screws (stainless or coated). As for tools: an impact driver is WAY better than a drill for deck screws. Less wrist strain, fewer stripped screws. But PLEASE wear safety glasses - those bits can fly. And get a magnetic bit holder so you're not fumbling screws 8 feet off the ground.

Tim's right about impact drivers being superior for torque, but precision matters too. For deck boards, you want consistent depth - not too deep, not proud. I use my Makita subcompact impact with a depth-setting collar. Manual drivers? Only for final adjustments on visible screws. What's your budget? The brushless models have better control.

Thanks both! Budget's mid-range - maybe $150 for the tool. Tim, good call on safety glasses, almost forgot those. Mike, didn't know about depth collars, that sounds smart. So impact driver it is. Any brand recommendations? Heard good things about DeWalt but my drill's Ryobi...

Stick with your battery system if you can! Ryobi makes decent impacts now. Just check the torque specs - you want at least 1500 in-lbs for deck screws. And Gary? Get a good kneeling pad too. Your knees will thank you after 500 screws.
