Hey folks! I'm about to build my first deck (16x20) and I'm overwhelmed by all the screw options. I've seen stainless steel, coated, structural, you name it. What do you guys recommend for a pressure-treated frame and composite decking? I want something that won't rust and will last. Thanks!

Welcome to the club! For composite decking, you can't go wrong with #8 x 2-1/2 inch stainless steel trim screws. I've used them on every deck I've built for the last 10 years, and they never corrode or streak. They cost a bit more, but worth every penny. Stick with a name brand like GRK or Simpson.

Listen to Wendy, but I'd also suggest getting a pack of coated deck screws for the framing, like the ones from FastenMaster. They're super tough and the coating really does prevent corrosion even in treated lumber. For the composite boards, though, go stainless. And don't forget to pre-drill if you can to avoid splitting.

I know everyone's saying stainless, but I recently used some ceramic-coated screws on a customer's composite deck and they've been flawless for 3 years now. They're way cheaper than stainless and look great. Just make sure they're rated for composite and you use a quality drill to avoid stripping.

All good advice. Let me add a pro tip: when you're working with composite, use a countersink bit and drive screws at a slight angle if possible. It reduces stress on the board edges. Also, I usually recommend #9 or #10 gauge for thicker boards. Don't skimp on length – you want at least 1-1/2 inches into the framing. Good luck!
