Hey guys, building a 12x16 deck and I’m using these coated deck screws. My old Ryobi driver keeps stripping heads and snapping screws. I need a screwdriver that can handle 3” screws into pressure-treated pine without killing my wrist. Budget around $150. What do you recommend?

If you want power and reliability, get the Milwaukee M18 Fuel Surge. I’ve driven hundreds of 3” deck screws no problem. It’s hydraulic so it’s quiet and has tons of torque. Worth every penny.

I’d say look for something with a brushless motor and variable speed. Makita XDT16 is my go-to for decking. Also, make sure you’re using the correct driver bit – a #2 square bit with a magnetic holder makes a world of difference.

DeWalt DCF887 all the way. I’ve had mine for years and it’s a beast. 3 speed settings and the LED light is handy. I don’t trust other brands for heavy framing.

If you’re on a budget, try the Hercules brushless from Harbor Freight. I got one for $50 and it’s been solid for my shed. Not as tough as Milwaukee but for occasional use it’s a steal. Spend the rest on good bits.
