Hey folks, planning to build a deck in my backyard this spring. I'm a bit overwhelmed by the screw selection at the big box - stainless, coated, some are even colored. For a pressure-treated deck, what do you recommend? I want it to last and not rust or streak. Thanks!

For pressure-treated lumber, you absolutely want screws that are rated for it. The ACQ treatment eats regular screws. I've used coated screws like GRK or Simpson Strong-Tie and they hold up great. Stainless is overkill unless you're near salt water, but it's pricey. Stick with coated - they're corrosion resistant and look good.

I'll second what PlumberPaul said. I use coated screws on all my deck jobs. But if you're in a high moisture area or want zero streak marks, stainless is the way to go - costs more though. Also, make sure you get the right length - at least 1.5 inches into the joist, but for deck boards, 2-3 inches is typical. Pre-drill to avoid splitting, especially near edges.

One tip: if you're using a drill/driver, get a good bit that fits snugly. Stripping happens when you use the wrong bit. And don't forget to countersink - some coated screws come with a built-in washer head that does it for you. Also, consider a collated screw gun for speed, but for a DIY, a regular driver is fine.
