Hey guys, I'm in the market for a new impact driver. I've been using a cheap no-name for years and it's finally giving up. I'm torn between the DeWalt DCF887 and the Makita XDT16. Mainly driving 3-4" deck screws into pressure treated wood and some light framing. Any advice? Budget isn't a huge deal, but I want something that'll last. Thanks!

I've got both in my kit. For deck screws, the Makita has a slight edge in control with the variable speed trigger. But for raw power, the DeWalt hits harder. The Makita is smoother, though. If you're doing all day driving, I'd go Makita for less fatigue. But DeWalt has a better warranty. Can't really go wrong.

I'm a Makita fanboy but I'll be objective. The XDT16 is one of the best driving tools for wood. It's got the assist mode that prevents over-torque on smaller screws. The DeWalt is great too but I've seen more reports of the chuck rusting. I'd say unless you need the absolute max power (like big lags), go Makita.

Thanks for the input! Sounds like I can't go wrong either way. I was leaning Makita anyway because I've got some other Makita tools. Anyone use the XDT16 with the 5.0Ah battery? How's the balance?

Yeah I run all my impact drivers with 5.0s. The XDT16 is a little front-heavy but not bad. The DeWalt is better balanced with compact batteries but with a 5.0 it's similar. If you're already in the Makita ecosystem, just get the XDT16. The build quality is legendary.
