Hey guys, I’m looking to upgrade my impact driver. I’ve been using a cheap cordless for ages and it’s dying on me. I’m torn between the DeWalt DCF887 and the Makita XDT16. Anyone have experience with both? I’m an apprentice, so price matters but I want something that’ll last.

I’ve restored a bunch of furniture using both brands. The Makita has better control for delicate work – less stripping of screws. But the DeWalt has more raw power for big lag bolts. Depends on what you do. For general use, I’d go DeWalt if you want brute force.

I’m a weekend warrior, so I don’t use ‘em daily. I got the DeWalt cause it was on sale with a kit. It’s solid, no complaints. My buddy has the Makita and says it vibrates less. But honestly, you can’t go wrong with either. Check if you already have batteries for one brand – staying in the same ecosystem saves cash.

Team DeWalt all the way! I’ve used my 887 for 2 years framing decks and sheds. It’s indestructible. But I ain’t tried the new Makita. If you want raw torque, get the DeWalt. If you want a smoother trigger, maybe Makita. But for the price, DeWalt wins IMO. Also, get a 5Ah battery, you’ll thank me later.

Thanks guys! I already have a DeWalt drill, so I’ll probably stick with the 887 for battery compatibility. The sale at Home Depot doesn’t hurt either. Appreciate the advice!
