DeWalt vs Makita screwdrivers - which one should I get?

Hey guys, I'm in the market for a new cordless screwdriver. I've been using a cheapo one from HF for years but it's finally dying. I'm looking at either the DeWalt DCF680 or the Makita DF001DW. I mostly do weekend projects around the house - building a deck, hanging shelves, that kind of stuff. Any recommendations? I want something that'll last but won't break the bank. Thanks!

Hank, I've used both professionally for years. The DeWalt DCF680 has a gyroscopic sensor that takes some getting used to but is super handy for tight spots. The Makita DF001DW is more traditional with a clutch. If you're doing deck work, you'll want the Makita because it has more torque and a clutch to avoid stripping screws. DeWalt's gyro is cool but can be finicky. Also, consider battery platform - if you already have DeWalt batteries, stick with them. I have both, but for a weekend warrior, Makita might be more user-friendly. Just my 2 cents.

From a safety perspective, both are fine, but I've seen too many guys use these tiny screwdrivers for heavy-duty tasks and end up with wrist injuries. Make sure you're using the right tool for the job. The DeWalt has a built-in LED which is nice for dark spaces, but the Makita's ergonomics are better for prolonged use. Also, always wear eye protection when driving screws - you never know when one will strip and fly. And check the torque specs: the Makita DF001DW has about 44 in-lbs, while the DeWalt DCF680 has around 30 in-lbs. For deck building, you'll want more torque. Just be careful out there.

Thanks for the advice! I do have a couple of DeWalt 20V batteries already, so that might sway me. But I'm a bit worried about the gyro thing. Is it really that hard to get used to? Also, Rick, thanks for the safety tips. I'll definitely grab my goggles. I think I'll go with the Makita for the extra torque. Anyone know if there are frequent sales on these?

Hank, the gyro takes a day or two to get used to, but once you do, it's second nature. That said, if you're already invested in DeWalt batteries, the DCF680 is a no-brainer. You can often find it as a bare tool for around $99. The Makita bare tool is usually $79, but you'd need to buy into their battery system unless you have an adapter. Check Amazon or Home Depot for sales around Father's Day or Black Friday. Also, consider the new DeWalt DCF680N2 - it's a newer model with better gyro. But honestly, for weekend projects, either will serve you well. Let us know what you pick!
