Found a killer deal on a 32-piece screwdriver set - too good to be true?

Hey everyone! So I was browsing at Harbor Freight earlier and stumbled on this 32-piece screwdriver set for only $14.99. It's got all the basics - Phillips, flathead, torx, even some precision ones. The brand is some no-name "ProGrip" thing, but they feel decent in hand. As an apprentice just starting out, I'm trying to build my toolkit without breaking the bank. Is this worth grabbing or should I save up for something like Klein or Wera? Don't wanna waste cash on junk that'll strip screws or break in a month!

Wendy, I've been restoring old homes for 20+ years, and here's my take: those bargain sets are tempting, but they're often made of cheap chrome-vanadium steel that deforms under torque. I've seen apprentices strip antique brass screws with off-brand drivers - not pretty. That said, for general DIY or light use, they might get you by temporarily. Check if they have a lifetime warranty; some store brands do. Personally, I'd recommend investing in 2-3 quality drivers (a #2 Phillips and 1/4" slotted at minimum) from a trusted brand. They'll outlive you.

lol Paul's not wrong about quality, but as a woodworking hobbyist, I've actually had good luck with some of those HF sets for non-critical stuff! I bought a similar set 3 years ago for assembling Ikea furniture and light workshop tasks, and they're still kicking. The handles aren't as comfy as my Wihas, but for $15? Can't beat it. Wendy - if you're just starting out and need variety, go for it! Just don't use them on anything precious or high-torque. And maybe keep the receipt in case the tips round off.

Thanks guys! Paul - you make a good point about stripping screws, that's my biggest fear. Rick - glad to hear they lasted you a while! Think I'll grab the set for now since I need something for basic home repairs and my apprenticeship tasks (supervisor provides pro tools for jobs). I'll pair it with one good #2 Phillips like Paul suggested. Appreciate the advice!

Smart move, Wendy. One pro tip: when you get the set, test each driver on a scrap piece of wood or metal. If the tip shows wear immediately, return it. And always match the driver size EXACTLY to the screw head - that matters more than the brand. Happy wrenching!
