Stopped by a garage sale this morning and spotted a huge screwdriver set – looked like a professional set, maybe 50 pieces with all sorts of bits, insulated handles, the works. The guy wanted $50 for it. I'm a weekend warrior, mostly assembling furniture and small repairs. Is this a good deal or am I overpaying? Need some advice before I go back tomorrow.

If it's a quality brand like Wera or Wiha, $50 is a steal. I've seen those sets go for $200+. But if it's some no-name brand, you could still be okay for light duty. Check the tips for wear and make sure the bits are standard sizes. Insulated handles are a bonus if you do any electrical. I'd say grab it if the ratchet mechanism feels smooth.

I'd haggle. Offer $30, maybe he'll take $40. Garage sale folks usually want to clear space. For $50, you could get a decent new set with a warranty. But if it's vintage (like old Snap-on or Proto), that's a different story. I've collected some vintage screwdrivers that are better than anything made today. Do you have pics? Post them if you can.

I've been a carpenter for 30+ years, and I say: good screwdrivers are worth the money because they save your hands. If the handles are comfortable and the tips fit tightly, you'll appreciate them on every job. At $50, it's probably a good deal if it's a full set. I'd check if the bits are interchangeable – that's handy. And don't forget to look for a lifetime warranty; some brands honor it even without a receipt.

Thanks everyone! I went back and offered $40 – he took it. Turns out they're Wera Kraftform, and the case is packed with extras like a stubby and a ratcheting driver. Can't wait to try them out. Appreciate the advice!
