Hey everyone, I'm about to build my first deck (12x16) and I need a reliable screwdriver set. I've got a drill/driver but I'm looking for something for precision and maybe for screws that strip easily. Any recommendations? I'm on a budget but want quality.

Welcome to the forum! For a deck, I'd say get a good set of Robertson (square) bits, not just Phillips. The #2 square bit is your best friend for deck screws. For a driver, you can't beat a good impact driver, but if you're just using a drill, make sure you have a clutch. For screwdrivers themselves, I'd go with a set that has both Phillips and flathead, but mainly you'll want bits. Wera or Wiha make great bits that last. Don't cheap out on bits, they strip.

I second Pete's advice, but let me add: get a hand screwdriver with a comfortable handle for the final tightening or for awkward spots. I've had a lot of success with the Klein Tools multi-bit screwdriver - it's got a rubberized grip and a bunch of bits, and the bits are sort of hollow for better grip on the fastener. Also, keep some spare #2 square bits in your pouch. For the deck structure itself, you should use galvanized screws and a driver, but for the finish work, a hand driver is good for avoiding over-tightening and stripping.

Hey! Since you're on a budget, I'd suggest the Milwaukee 10-in-1 or a similar multi-bit screwdriver. It's not too pricey and has all the basics. But more importantly, get a decent bit set like the DeWalt or Bosch ones with a case. The key is to use the right bit for each screw, and don't use worn-out bits. I also found that using a magnetic bit holder helps a lot - it prevents dropping screws in tight spots. Also, mark your bits so you know which are for tapping and which are for drilling - but for decking, you'll mainly need the square drive.

I've been building for 30 years, and my advice: invest in a good ratcheting screwdriver, like the Snap-On or even a decent Husky. That will save your wrist. For deck screws, I actually prefer using a screw gun with a depth adjustment - you can rent one if you don't want to buy. That will make the job so much faster and consistent. And always pre-drill pilot holes, especially for hardwood. I've seen too many newbies split boards. As for the screwdriver set, make sure the tips are sharp and fit snugly - if they wobble, you'll strip heads. Also, a good magnetic tray will save you sanity.
