Hey folks, quick question. I've been doing some electrical work and I'm always paranoid about getting zapped. I know screwdrivers have insulated handles, but should I wear rubber gloves too? Or is that overkill? I've seen some guys do it and others don't. What's your take?

Good question. I've been doing this for 30 years and I always wear insulated gloves when working on anything live. Better safe than sorry, you know? But make sure they're rated for the voltage you're working with. Cheap ones can give a false sense of security. And never use them if they're damaged or have holes.

I'm just an apprentice, but my instructor always says to treat every screwdriver like it's live. I usually wear gloves when I'm poking around in panels. Also, remember to use the right screwdriver for the job - don't use a flathead on a Phillips, it can slip and cause accidents.

Thanks for the replies! I'll definitely get some rated gloves. Also, I heard that you should never carry a screwdriver in your pocket with the tip pointing down - is that true? I've been doing that for years.

Yeah, it's a bad habit. If you slip or fall, you could stab yourself. Use a holster or a magnetic holder. And also, don't use a screwdriver as a pry bar or chisel - that's how you break the tip and end up with a trip to the ER. Stay safe out there!
