Hey everyone, I'm building a deck next weekend and need to cut about 20 4x4 posts for the frame. I've got a circular saw but I'm worried about getting clean cuts. Should I stick with the circular saw, or invest in a miter saw or chainsaw? Budget is tight but I want it to look professional.

I'd say get a good miter saw if you can swing it. A 10" sliding compound miter will make quick work of those 4x4s and give you perfect angles. I use my Makita for decks all the time. If not, a circular saw with a speed square can do the job, but you'll need to flip the post for a clean cut.

Pete's right, but for the cleanest cut, use a fine-tooth blade (60-tooth) in the miter saw. If you're using a circular saw, clamp a straightedge guide. I've seen too many wobbly cuts from freehanding.

Don't forget safety! If you use a miter saw, make sure the blade guard works and keep fingers away. Also, wear eye and ear pro. I'd recommend a saw with a laser guide for accuracy. And never cut without securing the post!

What about using a chainsaw? I've got an old Stihl and it cuts 4x4s like butter. Just mark your line and go slow. It's cheaper if you already have one.
