Hey everyone, I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck in my backyard this summer. I need to cut pressure-treated lumber, 2x6s, 4x4s, and maybe some 5/4 decking. I currently have a circular saw that's seen better days. Should I invest in a miter saw, a table saw, or just get a better circular saw? I'm on a budget, but I want clean cuts. Any recommendations?

For a deck, you'll want a good miter saw for crosscuts and a table saw for ripping, but if you're only doing one project, a high-quality circular saw with a guide can handle most of it. I've been using a Milwaukee 7-1/4" circular saw for years – it's got the power and dust collection beats most. Pair it with a 60-tooth finish blade and you'll get cuts as good as any miter saw. But honestly, if you can swing a used 10" compound miter saw from a pawn shop, that'll speed up your crosscuts big time. Don't waste money on a cheap table saw – you'll regret the wobbly fence.

I'd say get a decent circular saw and a straightedge guide. You don't need a miter saw for a deck unless you're doing angled cuts. For the price of a new miter saw, you could get a good circular saw and a bunch of deck screws. I built my shed with a $60 Skil circular saw and a 2x4 guide – turned out fine. Also, check pawn shops and Facebook Marketplace for used saws. You can find a Delta or DeWalt miter saw for like $100 if you're patient. But whatever you do, don't buy a cheap table saw – they're more trouble than they're worth for this project.

I gotta agree with Steve on the Milwaukee – their saws are beasts, but I'll also throw Festool in the ring if you're serious about dust and precision. I know it's pricey, but the track saw from Festool is a game-changer for decking – you can rip and crosscut with perfect edges. That said, if you're just doing one deck, a good circular saw and a speed square will do 90% of the work. I'd also suggest renting a miter saw from Home Depot for the weekend – that way you get the tool without the investment. And yeah, avoid cheap table saws like the plague.

Thanks for the input, guys! I think I'll go with a better circular saw and maybe a guide – I know some of you mentioned it. I'll check out pawn shops for a used miter saw, but I'll stick with my budget for now. Appreciate the tips, especially about the blade upgrade. Can't wait to get this deck done!
