Hey folks, I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck in my backyard. I've got the basics covered (circular saw, drill, etc.), but I'm wondering if I should invest in a framing nailer and a power mitre saw (maybe a sliding compound?). I want clean cuts and efficient nailing. Any brand/model recommendations? Budget is around $500 total for both.

Get a good sliding compound mitre saw first - precision cuts are key for a professional look. I'd go with a Makita LS1019L for the accuracy and the laser guide. For the framing nailer, a Paslode cordless is reliable but pricey; you could rent one if you're on a budget. Don't cheap out on blades though.

I'm a Makita fanboi too haha but honestly, for a one-time deck build consider renting a nailer. Unless you plan more projects. Also grab a speed square and a level - not 'specialty' but crucial. And don't forget hearing protection!

Agree on the mitre saw. If you want to save, check out the DeWalt DWS779 - it's a workhorse. For nailers, I'd say buy a quality one like the Hitachi NR90AES (now Metabo). You'll use it for future projects. And make sure you pair it with a compressor that has enough CFM.
