Hey all, planning to build a 12x16 deck next month. I've got the framing down, but for the decking boards I'm torn between a framing nailer and a finish nailer. I'm using 5/4 x 6 pressure treated. I want it to look clean but also hold up. What do you guys recommend? I've got a compressor already.

If you want it to look clean, don't use a framing nailer - those leave big holes. I'd go with a 15 or 16 gauge finish nailer. I used my Hitachi 15 gauge for my deck and countersunk everything. Looks pro. But make sure you use ring shank nails for holding power.

Agree with Dave. Framing nailers are for studs, not decking. But also consider a coil siding nailer - that's what I used on my shed roof and deck. It holds like crazy and the heads are small. Plus you get a ton of nails in one coil. Just my 2 cents.

I've restored old decks and built new ones. For hidden fasteners, check out the Camo system. I use their Marksman Pro - it's a specialty tool but hides the nails completely. No hammer dents or nail heads to rust. Worth the extra cash if you want a showpiece. Else, go with a quality 15 gauge like the Makita AN924 (I'm biased lol).

Thanks guys! Great advice. I'm leaning toward the finish nailer route with ring shanks. Pete, the coil nailer sounds cool but I think I'll stick with something I know. Mike, that hidden fastener system looks awesome but maybe overkill for my first deck. Appreciate the help!
