Hey all, planning to build a 12x16 deck this spring. I've got a circular saw and a drill, but what else should I rent or buy? Thinking about a miter saw for the railings and maybe a nail gun. Any must-haves?

Welcome to the club! For a deck that size, a miter saw is a game changer for cutting balusters and rails. Also grab a good level and a chalk line. Don't skimp on a decent impact driver – you'll thank me later. And check your local rental for a pneumatic framing nailer if you don't want to buy one.

I'd add a circular saw with a decent blade is fine for the long cuts, but a track saw can help if you're picky about straight lines. For the joists, a palm nailer is cheap and saves time in tight spots. Also, get yourself a square and some clamps – trust me.

Don't forget safety gear! Ear plugs, safety glasses, and good gloves. And for the love of all that is holy, use a proper ground fault outlet or extension cord. I've seen too many accidents. Also, rent a post hole digger if you can – manual digging is a back killer.

I'm team DeWalt for life. Their 12-inch sliding compound miter saw is awesome for deck work. But honestly, any brand with a good blade works. Get a good tape measure too – not the cheap ones. And if you're using screws, use deck screws, not drywall screws. Corten or stainless if you're near water.
