So I found a Festool Domino DF 500 on Craigslist for $400. The guy says it's barely used, comes with the systainer and a few dominos. I know these things retail for like $1200+. I mostly do woodworking projects - tables, shelves, that kind of thing. Is this a no-brainer or are there some catches? I've never used one before.

Bob, if it's legit, that's a steal! I use mine on every job site, saves me hours compared to dowels or biscuits. Check the plunges and make sure the fence is square. Also, make sure the serial number isn't stolen - that's a common issue. If it checks out, grab it. You'll wonder how you ever did without it.

I'd also recommend testing the depth stop and the plunge action for smoothness. The batteries? It's not cordless, so no battery issues. But look for any signs of wear on the base plate that might indicate heavy use. Even if it's been used a bit, parts are replaceable, but that price is great. I'd jump on it, but be prepared to buy more dominos - the 500 size is the most common but you might want the 700 later for thicker stock. Just a thought.

Thanks guys! I'll check the fence and test the plunge. Serial number I'll ask for sure. If all good, I'll be the proud owner of a Festool. I have a feeling my wife won't like the price of the dominos though... lol. Appreciate the advice!
