Hey everyone, I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck in my backyard. I've got the lumber and hardware, but I need a good set of wrenches. I'll be tightening a lot of lag bolts and nuts. Should I get a combo set or just a few adjustable ones? Budget is around $50-100. Thanks!

If you want precision, avoid adjustable wrenches for deck work. They can slip and round off the bolt heads. Go with a good 12-point combination set from 3/8 to 3/4 inch. I'd recommend GearWrench or Proto. The 12-point will give you more engagement points. Spend the extra $20 if you can.

I just built a shed with a cheap combo set from Harbor Freight and it worked fine. But yeah, for a deck you'll be doing a lot of turning, so maybe get something with a ratcheting end. I broke a cheap wrench on a tight bolt once. So, maybe mid-range like Husky or Kobalt is a good balance.

I second the ratcheting combo set. Tekton makes a decent set for around $60 that has worked well for me. Also, don't forget a good torque wrench for those deck screws—over-tightening can strip them. But if you're on a tight budget, just get a basic set and a breaker bar for stubborn bolts.

Thanks all! I think I'll go with a mid-range ratcheting combo set from Tekton or Husky. And I'll grab a torque wrench too. Appreciate the advice!
