Hey everyone! I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck in my backyard this spring. I've got most of my tools sorted out, but I'm stuck on wrenches. I need a set that can handle lag bolts and carriage bolts. Should I go with a socket set or combination wrenches? Any recommendations for a good value set that won't break the bank? I'd say my budget is around $100-150. Thanks!

Hey man! For a deck, I'd def recommend a good socket set. You're gonna be driving a lot of lag bolts, and sockets will save your wrists. I'm a big fan of the TEKTON sets on Amazon. They're not Snap-On, but for the price you get a solid range of sizes and a ratchet that won't strip. Also pick up a ratcheting combo wrench in 1/2" and 9/16" for tight spots. Good luck with the build!

Hold up DeckBuilder99. Before you buy anything, make sure you have the right safety gear. Safety glasses and gloves are a must when dealing with wrenches and bolts. Also, check that your socket set has a proper locking mechanism so sockets don't fly off. For the deck, I'd go with a 1/2" drive set to handle the torque. And remember to use anti-seize on stainless steel bolts to avoid galling. Stay safe!

Socket set all the way. I built my shed last year and used a Husky set from Home Depot. It's around $150 for a 200 piece set and it's been bulletproof. The ratchet has a 90-tooth mechanism which is great for tight spaces. One tip: get a torque wrench too for the lag bolts if you're really concerned about over-tightening. But honestly, for deck building, a good impact driver and impact sockets will make the job 10x faster!

Thanks guys! This is super helpful. I think I'll go with a socket set and maybe add a couple of ratcheting wrenches. @ToolTimeTim773, good call on the anti-seize – I'll grab some. And @PowerToolPete202, I actually have an impact driver, so I'll look into impact sockets. Appreciate the advice!
